Empowering Middle School Students with Leadership & STEM Education

The Arthur Holden Leadership Institute (AHLI) was created to honor Arthur Holden, a dedicated leader in the Painesville community. Since 2009, AHLI has helped middle school students develop leadership, character, and STEM skills through hands-on learning and environmental exploration.

This one-of-a-kind program began at Heritage Middle School and has since expanded to Madison Middle School and Chardon Middle School. Over the course of three years (fifth through seventh grade in Chardon and sixth through eighth grade in other schools), students engage in real-world scientific investigations while developing the essential skills needed to become future leaders.

AHLI thrives through the support of incredible community partnerships, including:

  • Martha Holden Jennings Foundation

  • Holden Arboretum

  • Lake Metroparks

  • Lake County Soil & Water Conservation District

  • Kent State University

  • Lake Erie College

  • Energy Harbor

  • Local school districts & community organizations

Through these partnerships, students gain access to experts, field experiences, and career exploration opportunities in STEM fields and the humanities.

  • Hands-on Science Exploration – Students study local environmental issues, collect & analyze real-world data, and engage in inquiry-based activities.

  • Leadership & Teamwork – Working in lab groups, students develop collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

  • Career & Educational Pathways – Exposure to science, math, and humanities careers, along with mentorship from professionals in the field.

  • Service & Community Impact – Eighth graders design and execute a leadership/service project, raising funds and making a difference in their school and community.

  • 6th Grade – Focus on Water

  • 7th Grade – Focus on Soil

  • 8th Grade – Focus on Energy (plus leadership project)

Each month, students meet after school for interactive learning sessions with their AHLI School Coordinator, YMCA Program Coordinator, and community partners to prepare for immersive field trips.

The Arthur Holden Leadership Institute is more than just a science program—it instills leadership, teamwork, and a passion for lifelong learning. Students develop a deep appreciation for the environment, their community, and their own potential to create positive change in the 21st century.
